Musk told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday that the Model S is an investment for China.
Tesla’s announcement comes a week after Musk told CNBC that he is building a second factory in China, which could be ready by next year.
Tesla has been a popular choice for consumers in China as it’s a car that is cheap and has no carbon emissions.
It has been selling in China since 2013.
China has been working to develop its electric car market and has been offering subsidies to help companies build electric cars.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has promised to cut subsidies for electric cars by 50% to 100% by 2030.
