Tesla is offering guaranteed second-home car prices for first-hand owners of its Model S electric car in China.
The new deal, which comes with a $1,500 guarantee, will be offered in the second half of 2018.
“The second hand cars offer the same warranty as the first-hands, so we want to offer the second-hands customers a second-chance to purchase their first-time car,” Tesla said in a statement.
The first-person cars have been on sale since March and have been subject to strict safety checks, but Tesla has only offered them in limited quantities.
“In China, where Tesla is based, second-class cars are often limited to 100,000 units or less,” said the company.
“This will be reduced to 25,000 in 2018, down from a maximum of 50,000.
We have also extended the limited supply in order to meet the increasing demand.”
Tesla said it will be offering the cars in limited numbers, but will only offer the cars as a special offer.
“We are committed to giving our first-generation Model S cars the same quality and value as our second-generation cars,” said Elon Musk, the company’s CEO.
“That’s why we’re offering a guaranteed second home car price of $1.50 per kWh in 2018 for first time owners, which is up from the current $1 per kWh.”
Tesla, which has been a dominant player in the auto industry in recent years, has been criticised by China regulators and environmental groups for its environmental and safety record.
In 2017, Tesla sold its first-ever car to the Chinese government and then the government approved the sale of the car to a third party.
In 2018, Tesla and its Chinese partner, Wanxiang, sold the first Tesla Model S car in the country to the State Council of China.
Tesla’s Chinese partners also sold the car and subsequently bought Tesla’s car-sharing service, which was also sold in the People’s Republic.
The company said it is “actively evaluating” the Chinese regulatory system for the sale and delivery of its cars, and is “monitoring the process”.
The company added that it has also extended its second-guess offer to third-party dealers.
